A trigger point is a localized spasm or knot in the muscle fiber which, if compressed, may cause pain that is referred to other parts of the body.
A massage therapist focuses on pressure points in the muscle and along these tendons to relieve pain. This type of work releases trigger points and spasms in the muscle and tendons themselves and trigger point massage also helps improve flexibility.
These areas are typically very painful.
A trigger point is a knot in a muscle that causes pain and dysfunction. They cause referred pain. Muscle restriction and spasm cause the pain. Trigger points also cause sustained contraction of muscles leading to spasms and weakness. Often, headaches are a form of trigger point pattern.
Typically, massage therapists use a type of compression – sometimes referred to as digital pressure – to help relieve trigger points. Removal of force and encouraging length in the tissue relieves these spasms. Therapists apply digital pressure for up to 90 seconds when trying this method, until a change in tissue feels possible.
